The Benefits of Yoga

Strength.  One can really achieve a great overall workout from practicing a few times a week. Flexibility, strength, and a cardiovascular workout are some of the benefits that might be achieved from a regular practice. Not only can you achieve physical strength, but yoga may also help with mental strength.  When moving in and out of the postures during your practice, one might achieve more body awareness, more confidence, and stability as you build the strength needed to hold the poses. Learning to let the mind go and learning to embrace the stillness and movement of your practice can be a very beautiful thing.

Stress-Relief. Another great reason to try out yoga is to help decrease stress by lowering cortisol levels. Yoga focuses on the breath (pranayama) as another important element of your asana practice.  It may help lower stress levels by elongating the breath to help oxygenate the blood, relaxing the diaphragm and other organs while breathing, and using pranayama during meditation... even the Mayo Clinic agrees!  Meditation can help reduce stress by relaxation the body and quieting the mind. Stillness. You may wonder why I think this is such a great benefit, but my mind goes a million miles an hour sometimes. And during my yoga practice I can finally achieve stillness in my mind! By focusing on the breath and bringing my awareness to my body and the present moment, the rest of my thoughts tend to slip away.. creating a sense of calmness and stillness. Some people can quiet their minds a lot easier than others! Needless to say it has taken me a long time to figure this one out for myself.

How can I learn more about Yoga?

There are so many different routes to consider when diving into the world of yoga. If you enjoy doing your research before starting something new, I recommend checking out the YOGA JOURNAL website. They have lots of helpful information on that site for all levels and beginners.  If you enjoy reading there are many books on Yoga, but here are some of my recommended texts:

●Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Swami Satchidananda
●Yoga as Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing
●Living Your Yoga: Finding the Spiritual in Everyday Life
●Yoga For Dummies

As far as group classes go, I definitely recommend checking out your local yoga studios to assist you with your practice. Tyr looking for the Yoga for Beginners, Yoga Basics, or Intro to Yoga classes.  It's always great to experience yoga in a classroom, because it opens your eyes to all the different types of people that practice yoga, bring your awareness to the different modifications and techniques available, and there is  a teacher walking around or demonstrating to help you through the more challenging asanas. The most important thing to remember is to honor your body and try not to force yourself to go further than your body wants to allow, and also be mindful of your breath.  Your breath will also help tell you where your "edge" is when going into the poses.  If you are holding your breath or feeling discomfort, then you  may need to back out of the posture.

If you like traveling, camping, music and large groups, then there is this great festival called Wanderlust Festival that take place around the world! I haven't been yet, but from what I hear from other instructors and attendees is that it's a pretty amazing experience.

Now, if you are in college, there are usually Yoga classes offered as a Physical Education credit.  If you are tight on the budget for now look into the Donation-based classes at your local studio, or maybe look into to trying some of the yoga videos online. I love practicing Hatha Yoga on the "yogayak" Youtube channel.  The dvd I purchased when I first started yoga was Rodney Yee's Gentle Yoga, and I feel like that was a great way for me to start.

As with any new physical exercise you might endeavor, please consult your physician to make sure that you have the "ok" before starting any new workout regiment. There are lots of modifications and variations in most postures to accommodate almost everyone's needs.  Start off slow, and be mindful of your body. Try not to push past the level of comfort, and allow your breath to guide you through your postures. If you find yourself holding your breath, release that tension by exhaling... if the posture is uncomfortable while breathing then please back out of that position to protect yourself from injury. Also, be sure to drink lots of water throughout your day so that you won't be dehydrated during your practice.
