Book Inspiration

9/3/2013

For the past few weeks, I have been reading up on yoga and yogic traditions. It's always refreshing to me to brush up my knowledge on the things I embrace in my life. Ever since the move here, I have been inspired to read more, research more, and try new things.  It's amazing how certain places or things can inspire us. Anyway, today I stumbled upon this youtube video that was posted by one of my favorite Art History professors.
I really was pleased to see this newly discovered form of art. It took me back to my middle school days of being bored and class and drawing pictures and designs on the edges of my books. Of course, my drawings were not anywhere near as elaborate as these paintings, but I felt like I could relate to those artists. Were these artists so inspired by what they were reading that they felt the need to reward the book with some artwork? Were these artists taking reading breaks from a wondering mind or tired eyes? Or were these artists just poor and in need of some free canvases? Whatever their reasons, no one will ever know why they decided to paint on these specific books.  It is interesting to say the least. Books contain such powerful words to help inform, entertain, inspire, or to help us escape our own realities. What a beautiful setting for inspired imagery!  This video really makes me wonder what inspires me and why?  What inspires you?

Jonpaul Smith is a worldly artist, and old friend of mine. He is an artist from the Cincinnati area, specializing in woodcuts, lithographs and intaglios. He sells most of his work to private collectors, but he is definitely an artist that will help inspire you. His tedious technique of weaving created images together to make a finished piece will blow your mind. Here is his website:

This up and coming artist is someone to pay attention to. P.J. Sulzby is another master of the 2D domain. His artistic experimentation using pen & ink, various printmaking techniques, and painting make him one of my favorite aspiring artists. Please check out his website:

The Dali Experience

I visited the new Dali Museum of Art today, in St.Petersburg, Florida. This has always been one of my favorite places to go to ponder and look for inspiration. I opted not to take the guided tour or audio tour, so that I could just visually absorb what the artist was trying to convey to the viewer. After leaving the state-of-the-art museum, I felt about as big as an ant, which is ironic because it is said that Dali kind of had a phobia of ants.
